Is Azerbaijan a safe country?

Pardon me for being an ignorant citizen but it seems to be part of the middle east and i know the middle east is more safe than we see on TV but my BF's dad is about to take a job there and it scares me a little, is the govt, citizens, and country as a whole a safe place to be?
