What is the point of baseball team mascots?

Call me a stick in the mud, but I actually can't stand mascots. They're so dopey. I'm a Brewers fan, and that big yellow slide out in left field that Bernie Brewer slides down is such an eyesore. This is professional baseball, not little league. Let's do away with the silly cartoons.
