When is it recommended to take the PSAT?

I'm planning to take it this year as a sopre, but my friend said that colleges don't look at your score until Junior year? So, i'm kinda confused right now... do colleges look at it? Because if they don't, i still want to take it to see where i'm at and be ready for next year, but if they are, i don't want to screw it up...
